Around our house, with all of these food allergies, Halloween used to be the scariest holiday of the year. However, with proper preparation, it can actually be a great time for the family.
The key for our family is communication. We always talking about the dangers of eating random candy in the bag or touching the candy. My son knows what he can and cannot have but more importantly, he knows he cannot eat candy without us going through it first. I always make a “safe” bag of candy to take with him anyway, in case a sweet tooth strikes. I also keep extra “safe” candy at our house so he can trade out his “unsafe” candy. And, of course, guess who gets to eat the unsafe candy? Yep, it’s a great night for me!
What candy is safe in our house? For my son’s allergies, I normally keep Oreos, Skittles, Smarties, Dum Dums and Ring Pops on hand. Back in the day he could not even have those candies so I used to make a bag full of little toys and give them that instead. I was grateful when I figured out what candy he could have, those toys were adding up!
While it can be a dangerous situation, I do believe with proper communication and preparation, it is easy to have a safe Halloween even with food allergies!
What’s your strategy?
